René LACOSTE entered into the legend of tennis by helping to steal the Davis Cup from the Americans in 1927 and winning the French Open three times. The true story of “the Crocodile" begins in 1927, when René LACOSTE was nicknamed "the Crocodile" by the American press, after he had made a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup Team concerning a suitcase made from crocodile skin. The nickname also conveyed the tenacity LACOSTE displayed on the tennis courts, never letting go off his prey! A friend developed an embroidered Crocodile for LACOSTE’s blazer which he then wore on the courts. In 1933, René LACOSTE and André Gilmer, owner and President of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm of that time, set up a company to manufacture the logo-embroidered shirt. The champion had designed this for his own use on the tennis court. This shirt revolutionised mens sportswear and to the best of our knowledge, was the first time that a brand name appeared on the outside of an article of clothing. The Piqué Polo shirt has been worn for than 75 years and continues to remain a statement of classic sportswear elegance. The crocodile was a natural choice for the LACOSTE brand’s emblem. The symbol is evocative: patient and powerful, the crocodile is a faithful representation of a brand that focuses on longevity, a consistent style and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
